That's a good point, In a revised version I placed the strut in the side plane rather than facing forward in this view, This slightly addresses the mysterious factor, but the real reason to have some sort of support as opposed to completely cantielevering that roof was to keep from having to put ste...

Living in "Dennys"

Is there anyone out there who would be interested in living in a Googie style house? Not an adaptive re-use but a new design inspired by mid-mod principles but that also fuses it with a googie sense of playfulness. Right now I am working on a design but maybe I am barking up the wrong tree. I'd appr...

There is more info on this subject somewhere on the board, but to start I would try a building materials yard, In San Bernardino Sepulveda Building Materials still has screen block, and if you go to the homepage for Orco block Company, this manufacturer still has specifications for screen block, inc...

Post and Beam construction can be very expensive because it does not easily meet today's building codes for Earthquake resistance, and it is more difficult to comply with Title 24 energy requirements. Additionally it requires especially in a modern house a craft and attention to detail and skilled l...

I have never understood why Modernists can teardown each other so visciously. While it is true that everyone is entitled to their own opinion this is not a world where in order for one to succeed another must be brought down. I think that there is an unfair amount or criticism leveled at some of the...

When my wife was in Architecture school her projects had a cool steel post and beam Mies/Ellwood/Case Study vibe to them. But instead of being called a "Modernist" The teacher complemented her for being a "Post-Post Rationalist Rationalist", substitute Modernist for Rationalist a...

This land was subdivided a long time ago and so is developed by in...

"Tract house style"

I have been working with this company since January and although I was not involved with the original designs I can tell you that their hearts are in the right place. At no time has this enterprise been about making a fast buck or slapping a modernistic exterior on a traditional house. That having b...

Boomers! Upland

We just had our son's first birthday at this place. The Bullwinkles is now the Be-Bop Cafe a retro memorabilia place, and there is a stage area where mascots in suits do a hoola hoop act to the soundtrack from Grease. It's a large place with lotsa party space, alas I never made it to Bullwinkles so ...

I grew up in Rialto and my big brother used to drag me to the Orange Bowl so he could play video games. He wouldn't share his quarters so I basically had free reign of the place, it was largely intact if I remember, it has been closed for atleast 10 years, and I am not aware off any plans to demo it...

I think this would be considered a ranch house, it has elements inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright Prarie Style architecture. The Stone has a horizontal stacked Wright quality, and the low pitched hip roof also has Wright style to it. That being said this house probably doesn't have a recognized stylist...

mid century vs. contemporary

You bring up an interesting point Joe, when you use "Modern" is that interchangable with Mid-Century Modern, or are you refering to International Style Modernism? Do you view these as contiguous under a general Modern movement? I mean as a historical discussion, because what we usually refer to as M...

What to do?

I really don't know if Flagcrete is even available anymore, the nearest equivalent would be cultured stone or some other brand of artificial stone veneer, which I'd use in new construction but dont think would look right in a period house, not if you want it to look original. You could encase the br...
