Sears!

I am currently working for Sears Holdings and wanted to start a discussion of Sears architecture.

We had a good thread on the 1927 downtown location here:
http://www.lottaliving.com/bb/viewtopic ... ight=sears

a quickie thread about sears santa monica:
http://www.lottaliving.com/bb/viewtopic ... ight=sears

And some discussion about shopping malls in general here:
http://www.lottaliving.com/bb/viewtopic ... ight=sears

the ONE thing i am really hoping to find is the name of the architectural firm that created all of the wonderful sears stores across the country. you know the ones... the fabulous Mid Century Modern style with the low sleek lines - and the 2 palm trees planted alongside the front overhang. The buildings that featured a phenonenol script SEARS in huge green neon!!!

the ones that have been slowly destroyed by faux mediterranean makeovers in the recent past.

who's got info?
are there any original stores left?
does jason (in whittier) still have the neon bones in his garage - or did they ever make it to the neon museum?

there was a book that i owned called
City Center to Regional Mall
Architecture, the Automobile, and Retailing in Los Angeles, 1920-1950
Richard Longstreth
(from MIT press)
http://www.amazon.com/City-Center-Regio ... 1258/ll-20

it discussed the development of Sears and Valley Plaza in North hollywood. but argggg... i don't have the book anymore.

i believe i donated to the Los Angeles Conservancy library - book collection.

Does anyone here have access to it?

Seems to me

The one in Buena Park looks mostly intact sans the old logo it has the new one and I think still has the tall palms poking thru the roof. And still
some remnants of the one in Pomona but less so since they moved to the Montclair Plaza (which as recently as the date of this post the mall operator has declared bankruptcy).

I know a guy whose father owned the land that the Sears in Tulsa leased to build its store in the 50's. He has old original 8x10 BW slicks of the store. Might have some info about the architects as well since he kept quit a large scrap book. I will check and get back with you. In the meantime I can only post this image which shows the Sears in the background with all of its super large neon sign glory. Sweet ass liquor store in front of it was done by Tulsa architect Robert Buchner (demolished in the 70's)

The looting shot, looks to be the rear of the Hollywood Sears, tragically obliterated by a hideous 70's stucco facade. It's abandoned now. There is was a beautiful Sears in Chevy Chase MD or within the city limits of NW DC, It was an MCM design, with an incredible auto ramp designed into it's facade. Sorry I have no photo reference or an architects name to add.

This is the first thing I wanted to share:
http://www.searsarchives.com/

One of my favorite commercial architects, Stiles O. Clements was responsible for the Sears stores in North Hollywood, Pasadena, Pomona among others.

The picture in Joe's post above, the one right under the vintage house plan, is the Sears on S Main in Houston. The tragedy is that ugly metal siding hides an Art Deco gem underneath.

Houston Chronicle Arts columnist Lisa Gray wrote a story about it with pics of what is underneath that mess. The article lists the Architects for this particular 1939 store.

2 of three built in the '30's are still standing in my area.
This one in Brooklyn.
The other is in NJ.
