William Selig (1864-1948) was a U.S. motion picture pioneer, born in Chicago, IL. In 1913, he purchased 32 acres of land next to Eastlake Park (now known as Lincoln Park) The property was turned into a zoo for the animals that he used in his films. By 1915, 700 animal species were residing at the Selig Zoo. In 1916, he moved his studio onto the zoo property. Even though his studio folded in 1917, he maintained the zoo at least to the mid 1930's. It closed around 1962 and the statues were salvaged.

Last week the restored statues were unveiled at the Los Angeles Zoo.

Zoo to display lion statues from early L.A. menagerie

Seven restored sculptures are once again welcoming visitors nearly a century after movie pioneer William Selig opened his Eastside park.

...The sculpture and several others tucked into the front part of the grounds may be new to the zoo, but they come from an era in Los Angeles when visits to ostrich farms and alligator farms were pastimes and zoos were wild, eccentric menageries.

None was wilder than the zoo cum studio that enterprising movie producer William Selig created in the early 20th century in what is now Lincoln Park.

A collection of 15 concrete lions and elephants graced the elaborate entrance to the zoo, which opened to the public in 1915...

So if the L.A. Zoo has seven statues of the 14 that they're going to restore, what happens to the other seven? I'm presuming that the other seven are all elephants if the Zoo's seven are all lions. And did the fifteenth statue go missing, or was it too far gone to restore? Hmm.

Looks like the other 7 are still in the shop. Not sure what became of #15. It's amazing ANY of them survived.

""...They are really spectacular examples of the art called cast stone," said John Griswold, the art conservator whose company has spent the last several years, off and on, restoring the concrete statues. (They will restore a total of 14.)"
