Neighborhood theaters: room for dreams, big and small
The 12-screen Landmark and the single-screen Crest represent the best of both worlds.
By Patrick Goldstein, Times Staff Writer
July 10, 2007

...The Crest is a lovely theater, but saddled with a crushing disadvantage. With one screen, its fortunes fluctuate by the luck of landing a hit picture; a multiplex can book hourly showings of a popular film while relegating a fading flick to a smaller theater. The only reason the Crest still exists is that it is owned by one man, Robert Bucksbaum, who bought it in 2002 and operates it as a labor of love....

...Still, business there has not been good. Bucksbaum is now in negotiations with an investment group to sell the land the theater sits on in return for a series of five-year leases that will allow him to continue operating the theater....

LOS ANGELES TIMES

Landmark status sought for Westwood's Crest Theater

By Martha Groves, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
May 6, 2008
When Tammy Hoffs arrived in Westwood Village as a young bride half a century ago, she was wowed not only by the palm trees and sunshine but also by the movie business. For that, she credits hours spent sitting in the dark with strangers at the Crest Theater.

"It played a great role in my enjoyment of films and my appreciation for the aesthetics," said Hoffs, 73, an artist who became a film writer, director and producer. "It has always been one of those extraordinary places . . . a single-screen, beautiful movie palace."..

Crest Theater Gets Landmark Status
DATELINE: LOS ANGELES

An Art Deco Revival movie theater near UCLA was designated as an historic-cultural monument today.

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved landmark status for the Crest Theater without discussion.

The theater at 1262 Westwood Blvd., now known as the UCLAN-Crest, was designed by architect Arthur Hawes for Frances Seymour Fonda, mother of actors Peter and Jane Fonda.

Built in 1940, the Art Deco Revival-style building features hand-painted ceilings and murals of Los Angeles landmarks and a large vertical neon sign spelling "Crest."

An historic-cultural monument designation provides buildings with a one- year reprieve from demolition and ensures that city staff trained in preservation and architecture review work permits.

LOS ANGELES TIMES

Future uncertain for Westwood's Crest Theater
10:46 AM, November 21, 2008

The venerable Crest Theater on Westwood Boulevard, which became a city historic-cultural monument in May, is for sale because the owner says anticipated tax breaks did not come through in time. And preservationists are now concerned about the site’s future...

Megaplexes May Lower Curtain on Area Theater
Los Angeles Business Journal: 11/24/2008
By Daniel Miller

Robert Bucksbaum, the movie-buff owner of the Westwood Crest Theatre, is putting the historic movie house up for sale after buying it in 2003.

“Parts of the building, including it’s famed murals and marquee, are on the National Register of Historic Places.â€￾

I don't believe that's accurate. The whole building is a City of Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument. If he were on the National Register already, he would have qualified for Mills Act.

C'mon people! Ya gotta go to The Crest Theater. It's not just a wonderful single-screen, mom and pop movie house, it's also got one of the best murals in the city decorating its auditorium walls. Under blacklight is a nighttime view of the Los Angeles that was and never will be again. Giant, painted neon signs decorate the skyline of the city with glowing, architectural icons like the Brown Derby, the Carthay Circle Theater, the Roosevelt Hotel, and even Bob Baker's Marionette Theater is represented on its walls.

Really, you've got to go and see the murals at this fantastic movie theater!

I attended the MODCOM field trip to his studio a couple years ago. He gave a terrific presentation, and you could tell he truly loved his work.

A class act.
