Joe's master bath resto

Postby Joe » Wed Aug 18, 2010 10:57 am

last room in the house.

right now I am gathering resources to choose from and build a budget. I hope to start in a few weeks!

essentially, I am looking for brands/specific products for the following:
- 30-32"x60" shower base
- shower doors (sliding or single operable, frameless)
- surround tile (looking at 4"). one inch mosaic looking too expensive. light blue-aqua
- ceiling fan/lights for cathedral ceiling and 6 inch joists
- recessed ceiling lights for 6 inch joists
- shower fixtures (something either period correct or timeless in design)

what I know...
flooring: going with Armstrong classic white VCT
lighting: original sconce above vanity + recessed down lights over sink, toilet, and shower
hardware: vintage replicas (still sold new)
original medicine cabinet
17x20 swing out mirror (as my vanity faces a window)
original blue briggs toilet and sink
original paper roll holder
original 60 inch vanity
other: mixing in some random Ann Sacks–Barbara Barry star burst tiles or Angela Adams Manfred tiles in the shower surround

Good luck with the reno
We found some 2" hex tile at the usual culprits - lowes / hd - for like 2$/sq ft - looks really good i the 20s bungalow we just sold.
Look forward to the pictures.

Sorry if I'm hijacking, but this bathroom is what inspired us to update ours; unfortunately, we are on a tighter schedule than the 4-6 week tile lead time would allow.

yep. we used densgard.

to second egads: the old-school way is... old.

kerdi has come out with another "innovation" in the form of ready-to-use board (gypsum panels with the kerdi membrane pre-applied) which would make install much easier. it's called kerdi-board.

http://www.kerdi-board.com/

if it wasn't mentioned above, one of the nice things about having the membrane on the outside of the tile (kerdi, redgard or densgard) is that the backerboard does not get wet and the shower dries out much quicker (read: less chance of mold). believe it or not, water gets through the grout and can soak the tile-mounting board. mike holmes told me so.

joe: you're using a contractor (?!)... seems like a good DIY project to me. (insert smiley emoticon here)

Any updates on the renovation?

We will soon be beginning a bathroom restoration on our Usonian house, and I am curious how it is going with yours...
space is the place

still looking to hire the right contractor. I really don't want to do much myself with this project other than design and get materials. been too busy to interview anyone. should slow up after Thanksgiving. pretty much have color and fixtures decided. hopefully start before Christmas.

I have been focusing on tree selections for the back part of my lot.

Not to steal any of Joe's thunder, but my neighbors are nearing completion on their Cliff May bath remodel and it's looking great. They have an interesting ensemble of materials: VCT, unstained walnut, Caesarstone, and Ann Sacks tile.
