what's a good breakfast spot in the Burbank/North Hollywood/Glendale/Pasadena area? Preferably Googie!

if not googie, I am looking for a mom/pop diner with good eats?

How about Pat and Lorraine's in Eagle Rock (in between Pasadena and Glendale). Best known as the location in "Reservoir Dogs." (But please don't be like Mr. Pink - tip well; it's Christmastime.)

4720 Eagle Rock Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90041

Also note, Joe, that the best burgers in Pasadena are at Tops. They also have a good breakfast, but the restaurant isn't much to look at. ( http://www.topsburger.com/ ) There used to be two locations in Pasadena, but looking at their web site, only one is left - at the corner of Walnut and Allen.

I'm still basking in the warm glow of a chorizo burrito I had there earlier this week.

Nice list, Deanna. I really admire it's complexity and all the thought that went into it. Many of those places started out interesting or have some great family history or lineage, but...and please don't take me as snobby, I'd probably have to pass on most of them as recommendations for architectural integrity or design inspiration or even food. (that sounds so awful) but I must say the following get passing grades from my school...in some kind of order:

Bob's Big Boy - 4211 W Riverside Dr, Burbank
Astro - 2300 Fletcher Drive, Silver Lake
Rod's Grill - 41 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia
Paty's - 10001 Riverside Dr, Toluca Lake -
Shakers (ex-Prebles) - 601 Fair Oaks, South Pasadena
Foxys - 206 W Colorado Blvd, Glendale - http://www.foxysrestaurant.net/
Frank's - 916 W Olive Blvd, Burbank - http://www.franksburbank.com/

and I would add the following. While not all coffee shops, they are well worth visiting.

Pie 'n Burger - 913 East California Boulevard, Pasadena
Chili John's - 2018 West Burbank Boulevard, Burbank
Blue Star - 2200 E 15th St., Los Angeles, CA 90021
Goody's - 865 E Las Tunas Dr., San Gabriel
North Woods Inn - 7247 Rosemead Blvd. San Gabriel
Bahooka - 4501 Rosemead Bl., Rosemead
Philippe - 1001 N Alameda Street, Los Angeles

I highly suggest you make a special trip to Bob's Big Boy Broiler if you can.

I was able to do breakfast at Bob's Big Boy on Riverside in Burbank and Patys just down the street in Toluca Lake. Also did some pie at an Armet & Davis designed Denny's in Burbank.

Bob's was wonderfully original. eye candy everywhere. my pancakes and bacon were fine.

Patys in Toluca Lake gets a hug WOW. great food and service! Some great architectural features too. Love the logo!

I looks like Oregon's cost of living has caught up with California because all my meal prices seemed reasonable.

planning restaurant visits is a new fun element to trip planning. thanks for the suggestions.
